Kazi Nazrul Islam (English: Kazi Nazrul Islam, born- 24 May 1899, West Bengal; died- 29 August 1976, Bangladesh) was a famous Bengali poet, music emperor, musician and philosopher. He was awarded ‘Padma Bhushan’ in the year 1960 for his contribution in the field of literature and education. Nazrul composed about three thousand songs and also gave voice to most of them. His music is nowadays known as ‘Nazrul Sangeet’ or “Nazrul Geeti”.
Kazi Nazrul Islam was born in a poor Muslim family in a village named Churulia near Asansol in the Bardhaman district of West Bengal state of India. His primary education was in the form of religious education. While working with various theatre groups in his adolescence, Kazi Nazrul Islam gained a thorough knowledge of poetry, drama and literature.
Kazi Nazrul Islam is one of the best writers of Bengali language, a patriot and the national poet of Bangladesh. His poetry and songs are equally respected in both West Bengal and Bangladesh. He is known as the ‘Rebel Poet’ because of the tone of rebellion in his poetry. The subject matter of his poetry is ‘man’s oppression on man’ and ‘thoughtful protest against social misconduct and exploitation’.
Kazi Nazrul Islam composed about 3000 songs and also gave voice to most of them. These are now known as ‘Nazrul Sangeet’ or ‘Nazrul Geeti’.
In his middle age, Kazi Nazrul Islam was afflicted with ‘Pix Disease’, due to which he was away from literary work for the rest of his life. On the invitation of the Bangladesh government, he came to Dhaka with his family in 1972. At that time, he was granted Bangladesh nationality. He died here on 29 August 1976.
