Shivaji Sawant (English: Shivaji Sawant, born: 31 August, 1940 – died: 18 September, 2002), full name ‘Shivaji Govindrao Sawant’, was a famous writer of Marathi language.
Shivaji Sawant was born on 31 August 1940 in Aajra, District Kolhapur (Maharashtra). He started writing with poetry, but his culmination was in writing prose. After years of contemplation, his first Marathi novel Mrityunjay was published at the age of 27. This novel became a symbol of his popularity. It has been translated into many languages including English, English, Gujarati, Rajasthani, Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, Bengali etc. Apart from Chhava (original in Marathi, 1989), two plays were written based on the plot of Mrityunjay and Chhava. Other popular works are – Ladhat (biography), Shalaka Saaj (fine essay), Ashi Mane Ase Namune (line painting), Morvala (line painting). Recently, his big novel ‘Yugandhar’, centered on the life of Yugpurush Shri Krishna, has been published. English translations of his novels Mrityunjay, Chhava, Yugandhar and the play Sangharsh have been published by Bharatiya Jnanpith. Shivaji Sawant died on 18 September 2002 in Madgaon (Goa).
