Australia Cocaine Seized

Wellington: Police in Australia have seized about 2.3 tonnes of cocaine after raiding a boat belonging to suspects that was damaged off the Queensland coast. Police have also arrested 13 people in this case. Officials gave information about this on Monday. Police said in a statement that the market value of these drugs was 760 million Australian dollars. Investigating officers told journalists in Brisbane that the drugs were brought from an undisclosed South American country.

Police had received information

Australian Police Commander Stephen Jay said that information was received regarding a smuggling conspiracy by the Comancheros motorcycle gang. These arrests were made on Saturday and Sunday after a month long investigation. Jay said smugglers twice attempted to smuggle the drugs into Australia by boat, but their first boat was damaged and the second boat sank on Saturday, leaving the suspects stranded at sea for several hours.

The biggest consignment caught

Police raided the fishing boat and seized drugs. Jay said the main boat was in international waters and could not be caught. Jay said more than a tonne of cocaine had been seized before, but the consignment seized over the weekend was the largest ever seized in Australia. The people booked are accused of conspiring to import narcotics into Australia via sea route and will be produced before various courts on Monday.

How much punishment is there?

Police said that along with the people on board the boat, people waiting on the shore to take cocaine were also arrested. Two of these people were under 18 years of age, all of them Australian citizens. There is a provision for maximum life imprisonment in the case. (AP)
