US President Donald Trump
Washington: Attorneys General of 22 states of America have filed a lawsuit against the executive order of President Donald Trump to end the 100-year-old immigration rule under which any person gets automatic citizenship if born in the country. Steps have been taken. Under this rule, if a person was born in America, he would get American citizenship by birth, even if his parents were from another country.
This is going to be a long legal battle
Trump’s nearly 700-word executive order, issued on Monday, seeks to fulfill a promise he made during the presidential campaign. But, it is not certain whether Trump’s move will be successful or not, because the legal battle over the President’s immigration policies and the constitutional right of citizenship is going to be long. Democratic attorneys general and immigrant rights advocates say there is settled law regarding birthright citizenship and that while presidents have broad powers, they are not kings.
White House’s clear stance
New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin said that the President cannot end this system through his order. The White House (President’s residence and office) said it was prepared to face the provinces in court and that the lawsuits were ‘nothing more than a protest by the left’. “The radical left can go against the grain and choose to reject the overwhelming will of the people, or they can work with President Trump,” White House deputy press secretary Harrison Fields said.
‘Those born in America are Americans’
Connecticut Attorney General William Tong said the lawsuit is personal to him. He is a US citizen by birthright and the country’s first Chinese-American elected Attorney General. “The 14th Amendment says what it means, and it means what it says – if you are born on American soil, you are American,” he said. That’s it.” (AP)
