Iran People Died After Drinking Alcohol laced with Toxic Methane (symbolic photo)
Tehran: At least 26 people have died in Iran after drinking poisonous alcoholic beverages containing methanol. Government media has given information about this. The official IRNA news agency reported late on Wednesday that men and women died in various cities and towns in the northern provinces of Mazandaran and Gilan and the western province of Hamadan due to exposure to poisonous methanol. IRNA said hundreds of people had to be hospitalized after consuming poisonous alcohol. The source of the alcoholic beverages was not clear in the report.
Death toll has increased in Iran
Alcohol consumption is generally banned in Iran since radical Islamists came to power following the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Many Iranians buy alcohol from bootleggers. Some people also make liquor at home for personal consumption. Deaths caused by alcohol consumption have increased greatly in Iran in recent years.
