TAIPEI: At least eight people died in a fire that broke out at a hospital in southern Taiwan on Thursday morning, officials said. The situation on this island has worsened due to storm ‘Krathon’. There was a fire in a hospital in Pingtang province, which was badly affected by Typhoon ‘Krathon’. It is said that due to the fire, smoke spread and eight people lost their lives due to suffocation. At present, the cause of the fire has not been known, investigation into the accident has been started.

Dozens of other patients have been safely evacuated from the hospital and taken to nearby safe places. Soldiers were called in to assist firefighters in evacuating patients and extinguishing the fire. The storm also hit Pingtang province in the afternoon with torrential rain and strong winds, disrupting life in many parts of the island.

According to Taiwanese weather officials, Typhoon ‘Krathon’ has made landfall in the major port city of Kaohsiung with winds reaching a speed of 126 kilometers per hour. The eastern and southern parts of the island have been inundated by rains caused by the storm over the past five days, forcing thousands of people in mountainous or low-lying areas to seek shelter.

Schools and government offices around the island have been closed for two days and all domestic flights have been cancelled. The weather administration has advised people of Kaohsiung and Pingtung not to go out when the center of the storm passes through their area. Kaohsiung administrators had earlier urged residents in the area to seek shelter from potentially damaging winds. Due to the impact of the storm, life has become completely disrupted.
