Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri

Beijing: China on Friday welcomed the visit of Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri this weekend. China said the development came after talks between top leaders and officials of the two countries following more than four years of military standoff in Ladakh. “We welcome the upcoming visit of Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri to China for the meeting of the Foreign Secretary-Vice Minister mechanism between China and India,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a press conference here.

Consensus reached on improving relations

Mao said a consensus was reached on improving and enhancing bilateral relations during the BRICS summit in Kazan between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi last October. He said that recently both sides have worked seriously to implement these common understandings. The Chinese and Indian foreign and defense ministers have met each other on multilateral occasions.

Ajit Doval had traveled to Beijing

Foreign Secretary Misri will visit Beijing on a two-day visit from Sunday for talks with his Chinese counterpart. This will be the second high-level visit from India to China in less than one and a half months. Last month, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval visited Beijing. Doval had held talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi under the framework of Special Representative (SR) talks on the border issue.

There will be discussion on starting Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

The Ministry of External Affairs said, “Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri will visit Beijing on January 26 and 27 for the meeting of the Foreign Secretary-Deputy Minister Mechanism between India and China.” The agreement was reached at the leadership level, in which the next steps for India-China relations will be discussed. It also includes areas like political, economic and people-to-people relations.” Both sides are expected to discuss ways to reduce tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh and the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. India’s stance has been clear

India has been saying that unless there is peace in the border areas, its relations with China cannot be normal. After the completion of the process of withdrawal of troops in Demchok and Depsang, Indian and Chinese armies have resumed patrolling in both the areas after a gap of almost four and a half years. Last week, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had said India-China relations are trying to disentangle themselves from the complexities arising from the border situation post-2020 and there needs to be greater consideration of the long-term development of relations.
