Beijing: After Tuesday’s devastating earthquake in Tibet, rescue workers are searching for people buried under the debris amid the harsh cold. Meanwhile, a 5.5 magnitude earthquake was felt in another county in neighboring Qinghai province on Wednesday. Local officials said there were no reports of any casualties in Wednesday’s earthquake. The earthquake occurred at 3:44 pm (Beijing time) in Madoi County of Golog Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in northwest China’s Qinghai province. Earthquake tremors were also felt in north-eastern Nepal. According to the China Earthquake Network Center (CENC), the epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 14 kilometers. This area is part of the vast Tibetan Plateau whose average altitude is 13 thousand to 15 thousand feet.

126 people died, 188 injured

At least 126 people were killed and 188 injured in Tuesday’s earthquake in Dingri County of Shigatse in China’s Tibet Autonomous Region. An earthquake of 6.8 magnitude occurred in China on Tuesday. Till Wednesday, 646 earthquakes were felt in Dingri County of Shigatse, a city located near the India-Tibet-Nepal border. Hong Li, head of the regional emergency management department, told official media that the strongest tremor was of 4.4 magnitude and was about 18 km from the epicenter.

Tremors felt in Nepal

Nepal’s earthquake monitoring center also confirmed hundreds of tremors on Wednesday. Center chief Lok Vijay Adhikari said, “But we have not officially recorded all the tremors because the epicenter is outside the country.” However, the earthquake, which occurred at 9.36 am (Nepal time), The impact was also felt in the Lobuche area of the Khumbu region of northeastern Nepal and in Kathmandu and the neighboring districts of Sindhupalchowk and Dhading.

Referring to the relief and rescue efforts in earthquake-affected areas, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said that relief work is ongoing by the Chinese government.
