South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol.
Seoul: The anti-corruption agency could not detain South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol from his residence. Today on Friday, the agency had reached the President’s residence to take him into custody in the impeachment case. But after hours of dramatic events there, he had to turn back. The agency said it failed to detain President Yoon after an hours-long standoff at his residence.
Let us tell you that South Korea’s anti-corruption agency had sent investigators to Seoul on Friday to execute a warrant to detain the country’s President Yoon Suk Yeol, who is facing impeachment, where hundreds of supporters have gathered at Yoon’s residence. Investigators from the office that investigates corruption allegations against high-ranking officials were seen leaving their headquarters in Gwacheon city early in the morning.
The court had issued a warrant to take him into custody
It is noteworthy that a South Korean court had recently issued a warrant to detain Yoon Suk Yeol and search his office. The investigating agency had said in a statement that the ‘Seoul Western District Court’ has issued a warrant to detain Yoon Suk Yeol and search the presidential office in a case related to the short-term martial law imposed earlier this month. The agency said it was investigating whether the short-term ‘martial law’ imposed by Yun on December 3 amounted to a rebellion.
Thousands of policemen deployed at the President’s residence
Thousands of policemen have been deployed around Yun’s residence. There has been no report of clash between police and protesters at present. If Yoon is detained, the anti-corruption agency will have 48 hours to investigate. He must then either request a warrant for their formal arrest or release them. Yun’s defense minister, police chief and several top military commanders have already been arrested over their alleged roles in imposing martial law.
Yoon’s lawyer called the warrant illegal
Yoon Suk Yeol’s lawyer Yoon Kap-kyun has declared the warrant illegal. Yoon has previously dodged multiple requests from the investigating team and government prosecutors to appear for questioning and has also obstructed the process of searching his offices. The impeachment motion brought against President Yun Suk Yeol in the ‘National Assembly’ for ordering the imposition of short-term martial law in South Korea was passed on December 14. Yoon’s powers as president were then suspended until the Constitutional Court ruled on his removal from office or restoration of his powers. (AP)
