The number of people arrested for attempting to illegally enter the US by crossing the border with Mexico has been reduced by 39 percent in January this year. The decline has been recorded amidst the action against illegal migrants of US President Donald Trump.
According to the US Customs and Border Security Department, the force patrolling the border made 21,593 arrests in January, while in December last year 47,316 people were arrested illegally while crossing the Mexico border. This number is the lowest since May 2020.
“Call it a trump effect,” the official residence and office of the US President ‘White House’ said in a statement. “Arrests along the border have declined rapidly before taking over as Trump.
Mexico authorities have also increased enforcement within their limits and the then President Joe Biden imposed strict asylum sanctions in June last year.
Subsequently, on January 20 this year, the arrests decreased even more after Trump was sworn in as the President.
The Home Ministry said on Tuesday that it has launched a video advertisement campaign at the US and international level in which illegal border people have been warned to return or not.
