America again opened its embassy in Syria.
Damascus: Syrian capital Damascus on Thursday saw an important diplomatic signal when the US flag was once again hoisted at the US ambassador’s residence which has been closed for years. The incident indicates improving relations between the new government of the US and the Syrian. According to Syrian official news agency ‘Sana’, till now the US ambassador to Turkey and now special envoy for Syria, Tom Barrack formally inaugurated the embassy.
Significantly, in 2012, the US closed its embassy in Damascus after a nationwide protests against the then President Bashar al-Assad. After this, due to terrorist activities, Syria and the current acting President Al-Shra were imposed in many ways. But recent incidents are showing the changes in the relationship between the two countries gradually.
America changed strategy on Syria
Washington was initially cautious about the new leadership of Syria. The present government is led by Ahmed al-show, who was previously the leader of an Islamic rebel group, which the US still lists as a terrorist organization. Recently, US President Donald Trump and Ahmed Al-Shra met in Riyadh, which is being seen as a diplomatic change. Apart from this, the US has gradually started removing some restrictions imposed under the Assad rule.
US State Department’s statement
On Thursday, the US State Department confirmed the appointment of Tom Barrack by issuing an official statement on the social media platform ‘X’ (East Twitter). The statement said, “Tom understands that working with Syria has widespread possibilities to prevent radicalism, improve relations and bring peace in West Asia. Together we can once again secure the US and the whole world.” (AP)
