Prahlad Iyengar
New York: An Indian-origin student doing PhD at the US-based Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has been suspended till January 2026 due to pro-Palestinian activism. The Indian-origin student has appealed against the university’s decision. The name of the suspended student is Prahlad Iyengar. Iyengar, in an essay published in the college magazine, has expressed his views in the context of Palestine while criticizing the pacifist strategy.
Ban on entry into campus
The title of Iyengar’s essay is ‘On Pacifism’. The essay also included the logo of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, which the US government considers a terrorist organization. MIT has banned Iyengar from entering the campus considering this essay to promote violent activities. The University believes that the language used in the essay and the presence of the logo incite violence.
The student was suspended earlier also
However, Prahlad Iyengar has denied these allegations and said that his aim was only to express his opinion and he did not support violence. However, this is not the first time that Iyengar has been suspended. Last year he was also suspended due to pro-Palestine demonstrations.
Academic career will be affected
Meanwhile, an organization named ‘MIT Coalition Against Apartheid’ shared a post on Twitter saying that National Science Foundation Fellow Prahlad Iyengar has been “suspended till January 2026”. The organization said the suspension would result in the termination of Iyengar’s five-year NSF fellowship and impact his academic career. (Language)
