Washington: The US has lifted sanctions on India’s three top nuclear institutions including the Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC). This will pave the way for the US to share civil nuclear technology with India. This announcement has been made by the Biden administration in the last week of its term and a week after the visit of National Security Advisor Jack Sullivan to India. In 1998, America had imposed this ban for conducting nuclear tests in Pokhran and not signing the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Not only this, America has added 11 Chinese institutions to the sanctions list regarding national security. The United States Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) has confirmed this.
Ban removed from these institutions also
According to the US Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS), apart from BARC, the ban on Indira Gandhi Center for Atomic Research (IGCAR) and Indian Rare Earths (IRE) has been lifted. All three institutions work under the Department of Atomic Energy of India. The decision is intended to support US foreign policy objectives by reducing barriers to advanced energy cooperation, including joint research and development and science and technology cooperation, which will lead to shared energy security needs and goals, BIS said.
America had given indications
The decision to lift sanctions is being seen as an effort to facilitate the implementation of the civil nuclear deal signed between India and the US. During his visit to India, Jake Sullivan had said that the time has come to take big steps to strengthen the partnership. Former Indian Ambassador to the US Taranjit Singh Sandhu welcomed the move and called it a result of deepening India-US partnership. (Language)
