Winder: A 14-year-old student opened fire at a high school in Georgia, USA on Wednesday, killing four people. Officials have given information about this. About a year ago, the Georgia police had questioned this boy after receiving a threat of shooting at school, when he was 13 years old. But, the investigating officers did not have enough evidence to arrest him. Georgia Bureau of Investigation director Chris Hozie said in a press conference that the dead included two students and two teachers of Apalachee High School.

The accused student surrendered

Chris Hozie, director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, said that within minutes of receiving the news of the shooting, two school officials tried to stop the attacking student. He immediately surrendered and was taken into custody. The accused student has been charged with murder as an adult.

What did the classmate say?

Barrow County Sheriff Judd Smith said nine other people, including eight students and a teacher, were injured in the incident and were hospitalized. All are expected to recover soon. Winder is about an hour away from Atlanta. The student (now 14 years old) was sent to the Regional Youth Reform Center on Thursday. One of his classmates, Leela Sairath, said that he (the accused) wanted to return to the algebra class and when his classmates at school did not open the door for him, he pointed a rifle at the students. Sairath said that some students went to open the closed door but instead of opening the door, they returned. She said, “I think they saw something and that is why they did not open the door. When I looked through the window, he (the accused) had turned and started firing.” She said that the mathematics students lay down on the ground and started crawling to find a safe place.

Inquiry was done earlier also

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said in a statement that the student was questioned in May 2023 after the FBI received information about someone making online threats about shooting at school. The FBI handed over the case to the sheriff’s department in Jackson County, which is adjacent to Barrow County. The sheriff’s office questioned the 13-year-old boy and his father, who said there was only a hunting gun in the house but it was out of the teen’s reach. The teen also denied making any such online threats. The sheriff’s office alerted local schools and asked for constant monitoring of the teen. The FBI said there was no probable cause for his arrest or additional action at the time.

Investigation is ongoing, search conducted

Law enforcement searched the teen’s family’s home in Bethlehem, Georgia, on Wednesday, local news outlets reported. Authorities said they were trying to determine how the suspect got the gun and how he entered the school. Barrow County Sheriff Judd Smith broke down in tears as he described the incident. He said he grew up in the area and his children attend the school. (AP)
