Dhaka: The High Court of Bangladesh on Sunday sentenced 20 students of the prestigious university to death in a serious crime case. The decision of the lower court on behalf of the students was challenged in the High Court. But the High Court has upheld the decision of the lower court to give death penalty to 20 students of this prestigious university. The lower court accused students were sentenced in the case of beating a second year student in 2019 due to alleged political affiliation.
Court officials said that a bench of Justice AKM Asaduzamman and Justice Syed Inayat Hussain gave a verdict together, completing the hearing on the appeal of the culprits against the mandatory confirmation of the death penalty and the decision of the lower court. According to officials, all the convicts were students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and were now associated with the dissolved Bangladesh Students League (BCL). BCL was a student wing of Awami League, the party of BCL Awami League, the party of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The accused were in this case
On October 7, 2019, the accused murdered the second -year student of the Electrical and Electronics Department of BUET for a Facebook post criticizing the government. According to officials, the next morning Fahd’s mutilated corpse was found in his university hostel room. Later investigation revealed that he was beaten by 25 fellow students with cricket bat and other blunt items for about six hours. After Fahad’s murder, both BUET and BCL expelled these accused students with immediate effect. On December 8, 2021, 20 convicts were sentenced to death by a Dhaka court. At that time Awami League was in power.

Attorney General M. Asaduzman said that apart from retaining the death sentence of 20 students, “The court also upheld the sentence of life imprisonment of the other five convicts.” He said that he was also a BUET student. ” Fahd’s father told reporters after the High Court verdict, “We are satisfied with the High Court’s decision.
