Dhaka: Bangladesh is continuously deteriorating its relations with India. Now he has completely followed the path of Pakistan. After the judges’ conference to be held in India, Dhaka has refused to participate in another event to be held in New Delhi. Due to this, there is a possibility of further increase in tension between the two countries. Bangladeshi officials cited restrictions on non-essential foreign travel at government expense as the reason behind this. He has refused to attend the celebrations related to the 150th anniversary of the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) acting director Mominul Islam on Friday confirmed receiving the invitation from the IMD a month ago, saying, “India Meteorological Department has invited us to the celebrations related to its 150th anniversary. We have good relations with them. And cooperation between the two countries will continue.” “However, we are not going to the event because the government has an obligation to limit non-essential foreign travel at expense,” Islam told bdnews24. He stressed on regular contacts between the meteorological departments of the two countries and mentioned his recent visit to India on 20 December 2024 for a separate meeting with Indian meteorologists.

Invitations have also been sent to these countries

IMD has invited several neighboring countries including Pakistan, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Maldives and countries of Central Asia and South East Asia. A top IMD official said, “We have asked all the countries which were part of India at the time of IMD’s inception (150 years ago) to participate in the festival. Pakistan has already agreed to participate in the event.” It has been done, but Bangladesh has not responded.”

Established in 1875 during British colonial rule, the IMD was established following devastating weather events, including the cyclone that hit Kolkata in 1864 and subsequent monsoon-related disasters in 1866 and 1871. Initially the headquarters of IMD was in Kolkata. It shifted to Shimla in 1905, Pune in 1928 and finally Delhi in 1944. The department will officially celebrate its 150th anniversary on January 15, 2025. (Language)
