Dhaka: Bangladesh will soon take steps to negotiate water sharing of trans-border rivers with India, an adviser to the interim government said on Wednesday. India and Bangladesh were set to sign a deal on Teesta water sharing during then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Dhaka in 2011 but West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee refused to support it, citing water shortage in her state.

The results will be shared with the public

Speaking at a seminar titled ‘Bangladesh’s fair share on shared river water’ here, water resources adviser Sayeda Rizwana Hasan said Bangladesh will soon take steps to negotiate with India on sharing of water of trans-border rivers, state-run BSS news agency reported. She said the negotiations will be held after considering public opinion. The outcome of the negotiations will be shared with the people.

‘Water sharing is a complex issue’

Rizwana said that sharing of water of international rivers is a complex issue, but the exchange of necessary information should not be political. He said that a country can want information about rainfall data and the condition of structures in the rivers and the exchange of data can help prevent loss of life and property. Environment, forest and climate change consultant Rizwana said that no country can go to the International Court of Justice unilaterally on such issues, rather both the countries should go there.

Interim government will resolve the differences

“Sharing rainfall data is a humanitarian issue. Data required to save lives must be provided. Bangladesh’s claims will be put forward clearly and firmly,” the news agency quoted Sayeda Rizwana Hasan as saying. The adviser stressed on protecting the country’s internal rivers and described them as living entities that must be collectively saved. Earlier this month, chief adviser Muhammad Yunus had said the interim government would work out ways to resolve differences with India over the long-pending Teesta water-sharing treaty. (PTI)
