Canberra: The Australian government has increased the international student visa fee drastically, which is expected to have a direct impact on Indian students. Indian students are the second largest group of international students studying in Australia.
Big hike in visa fees
The Australian government has increased the visa fee from 710 Australian dollars (473 dollars) to 1600 Australian dollars (1068 dollars). This new fee will come into effect from July 1.
Objective: Control the number of migrants
The government says the move is aimed at controlling the growing number of immigrants in the country, which has reached an all-time high. This is also putting pressure on the housing market.
New conditions for temporary visa holders
As per the new rules, temporary visa holders such as temporary graduates, visitors and maritime crew members will no longer be able to apply for a student visa while in Australia.
