Michael Martin who will become the PM of Ireland
Dublin: There has been a lot of political turmoil in Ireland. Michael Martin will become Prime Minister of Ireland for the second time on Wednesday after MPs formally approved him as the head of the coalition government. Martin’s ‘Fianna Fáil’ party won the most seats in the elections, but did not get enough seats to form a government on its own.
Consensus has been made on this matter
After several weeks of negotiations, the long-dominant right-wing parties Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael agreed to form a coalition with the support of several independent MPs. Under the deal, Martin, 64, will be prime minister for three years, while Fine Gael’s Simon Harris will be deputy prime minister. After this, both the leaders will change their posts for the remaining two years of their tenure.
Elections were held on 29 November
Members of both parties have ratified the government’s agreement and Martin’s name will now be confirmed by members of the Dáil, the lower house of parliament. After this he will be formally appointed to this post by President Michael D Higgins. In the elections held on November 29 in Ireland, ‘Fianna Fail’ won 48 out of 174 seats and ‘Fine Gael’ won 38 seats. (AP)
