Boat Sank on Red Sea
Cairo: At least 16 people are missing after a tourist boat capsized in the Red Sea. Egyptian officials have given information about this. Amr Hanafi, governor of the Red Sea region, said rescue workers rescued 28 people from boats south of the coastal city of Marsa Alam and some were airlifted for treatment. According to information given by the Red Sea Governorate on Facebook, Hanafi visited the spot where the boat sank.
People from many countries were aboard the boat
Hanafi said there were a total of 44 people on board the boat, including 13 Egyptians and crew members. There were 31 foreign nationals from America, Germany, Britain, Poland, Belgium, Switzerland, Finland, China, Slovakia, Spain and Ireland on board the boat.
The boat was hit by a big wave
According to officials, the boat named ‘Sea Story’ had no technical issues and had obtained all the necessary permits before the voyage. It was last examined in March regarding navigational safety. Initial reports based on statements by the boat crew and tourists said that a large wave hit the boat, causing it to capsize. This boat had set out from Marsa Alam on a five-day journey.

At present, it is not yet clear why the boat sank. According to its manufacturer’s website, the yacht was built in 2022 and can accommodate 36 passengers. The Egyptian military is coordinating the rescue operation with the governorate. Many tourist companies have closed or limited travel to the Red Sea due to the threat of conflicts in the region. (AP)
