Rio de Janeiro: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his first meeting with his British counterpart Keir Starmer, has announced that India will open two new consulates in the UK, in Belfast and Manchester. The PM also called for the extradition of fugitive Indian businessmen from Britain. After talks held on the sidelines of the G20 summit late on Monday, Stormer said that talks for an India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) would be resumed in the new year. At the same time, the Indian side insisted on the extradition of fugitive Indian businessmen Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi.

This was the first meeting between the two leaders since Stormer took over as British Prime Minister from Rishi Sunak in July. On the ambitious trade agreement, the two Prime Ministers expressed hope that a “balanced, mutually beneficial and forward-looking” free trade agreement (FTA) will be finalized while other issues are mutually agreed upon, according to an Indian government statement. However, many controversial issues remain to be resolved.

In a post on social site ‘X’, PM Modi described his meeting with his British counterpart as “extremely meaningful” and said that comprehensive strategic partnership with Britain is a priority for India. “In the coming years, we look forward to working together in areas such as technology, green energy, security, innovation and technology,” he said. We want to strengthen cultural ties along with trade.
