Lahore: Former Foreign Minister of Pakistan Khurshid Mahmood Kasuri on Friday refreshed many memories related to former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India and before that Finance Minister, died on Thursday at the age of 92. On this, former Pakistan Foreign Minister Kasuri said that Dr. Singh will be remembered in history as a person who was committed to improving bilateral relations between India and Pakistan.
Kasuri said that what he remembers the most was his statement in which Dr. Manmohan Singh had said to improve the relations between the two countries, “I am waiting for that day… when breakfast in Amritsar, breakfast in Lahore It will be possible to have lunch in India and dinner in Kabul.” Kasuri, 83, who was Pakistan’s foreign minister from November 2002 to November 2007, visited the entire region comprising the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). He gave credit to Singh for creating a cordial atmosphere and said that the best example of this is Singh’s statement that “he is waiting for the day when it will be possible to have breakfast in Amritsar, lunch in Lahore and dinner in Kabul.” “

Kasuri said he was fortunate to be part of a process that led to unprecedented progress during peace talks between the two countries. He said there was a tremendous increase in people-to-people contacts during Singh’s tenure as Prime Minister, resulting in mutual trust between the two governments. Kasuri recalled that Singh had expressed a strong desire to visit his birthplace Gah, located in Chakwal district of Punjab, Pakistan. The former foreign minister said he assured Singh that he would be warmly welcomed in Pakistan. Kasuri expressed hope that the late Prime Minister’s wife Gursharan Kaur and other members of her family would be able to visit Singh’s birthplace someday. Kasuri expressed his heartfelt condolences to his wife and other family members as well as the people of India. (Language)
