Colombo: A senior Sri Lankan Navy official on Wednesday claimed that two fishermen were seriously injured when 13 Indian fishermen were caught accidentally while being caught near the island. Sri Lankan Navy Commander Vice Admiral Kanchana Bangoda said that according to preliminary investigation, an accident was fired from a Navy jawan, injuring two Indian fishermen.
Fishermen did not follow instructions
Addressing a press conference here, Vice Admiral Bangoda said that the Navy personnel seized an Indian boat in the Sri Lankan water area on suspicion because when he was asked to leave the area, he directed the instructions. ‘Fish were caught illegally’
Admiral Bangoda said that the Indian fishermen were illegally catching fish in the water area of Sri Lanka and were not even paying any attention to the warning of going away from the area. Bangoda said that there was a conflict due to fishermen obstructing the naval personnel to perform their duty and during this time two Indian fishermen were injured due to bullet fired.
India’s tough stance
Five Indian fishermen were injured in a shootout by the Sri Lankan Navy on Tuesday morning near the Delft Island, in which two were seriously injured and India reacted strongly. The Acting High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in India was summoned to Mangalwar in the Ministry of External Affairs and a strong protest was lodged. Reacting to the incident, India had said that under any circumstances the use of force is not ‘acceptable’.
