Stockholm: Phone usage by children has been banned in Sweden. The Swedish government has become alert after several serious health cases were reported due to excessive phone usage by young children. Therefore, now the use of ‘screen’ by children below 2 years of age has been completely banned in the entire country. After this decision, it has been clarified in the advisory issued by the government that children should not be allowed to use any ‘screen’ including TV and mobile phone.
This guideline was issued for children between 2 and 12 years of age
The government’s advisory states that children between 2 and 5 years can use screen for a maximum of 1 hour a day, while children between 6 and 12 years can use screen for 2 hours. It states that adolescents should be allowed to use screen for a maximum of 3 hours a day. The Swedish government has issued this advisory at a time when various researches have shown that the quality of sleep in children and adolescents is being affected due to excessive use of screen.
Depression is increasing along with sleep being affected
Not only this, the report claims that along with affecting sleep, cases of depression are increasing in children due to excessive phone use and the level of physical activity is continuously decreasing. Countries like America, Ireland, Canada, Australia and France have also issued such advisories. Out of these, France has issued the strictest advisory that children below three years of age should not be allowed to use ‘screen’ at all. (AP)
