Beijing: The population of giant pandas in China has increased to about 1,900 after the use of artificial breeding method. This information is given in official figures. These members of the bear family are recognized for their round faces, thick bodies and distinctive markings of white and black hair on their bodies. As their population has increased, they have moved from endangered to sensitive category. Chinese experts say that breeding the giant panda was the most difficult process.
The big problem was artificial reproduction
“Artificial breeding of giant pandas was a big problem in the early days,” said Li Desheng, chief expert at the China Conservation and Research Center. “During the 1980s, we only bred one baby panda that lived to be two years old,” Li told state news agency Xinhua, adding that with technological and scientific advances, artificial reproduction rates and panda cub survival rates have now increased. A significant improvement is being seen in the rate and the average survival period of pandas has also increased.
