Taipei: Relations between China and Taiwan are becoming increasingly tense. Meanwhile, Taiwan’s Intelligence Bureau has said that China’s main spy agency is working with criminal gangs, shell (fake) companies and other suspicious partners to obtain intelligence related to Taiwan’s security. Due to this action of China, there has been a huge increase in the number of people arrested on charges of alleged espionage on the island. Taiwan’s intelligence bureau said current and retired Taiwanese military personnel are of particular concern.
Taiwan’s National Security Bureau released report
According to a report released over the weekend by Taiwan’s National Security Bureau, Chinese agents have tried to use the Taiwanese ‘underworld’ to provide funding to people who have information to sell. Many of these gangs have been operating since before the partition between the two parties in 1949 and are being hunted down.
These tactics are adopted
The report said that apart from this, search is also going on against loan giving companies and fake companies, religious sects and non-profit groups. Some payments are made through cryptocurrencies, while old-fashioned methods are also used such as sexual luring and pressure to reveal secrets. The bureau said a similar incident had happened to one-star General Lo Hsin-che, who was lured into a similar trap while deployed in Thailand. (AP)
