Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar reached Colombo.
Colombo: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s visit to Sri Lanka is expected to increase China’s uneasiness. Jaishankar has reached Colombo today for the first time after the formation of the new government in Sri Lanka. Less than a fortnight after Anura Kumar Dissanayake was sworn in as Sri Lanka’s President, he is on a one-day visit to meet the leadership of the island nation. Jaishankar wrote on the social media platform ‘X’ soon after landing at the Colombo airport, “It is good to be back in Colombo. Looking forward to my meetings today with the Sri Lankan leadership.
Jaishankar is the first foreign dignitary to visit Sri Lanka after the Dissanayake-led National People’s Power (NPP) government came to power on September 23. Therefore, China’s problems are bound to increase. China is keeping a close eye on this visit of Jaishankar. Sri Lankan Foreign Secretary Aruni Vijayawardene and Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Santosh Jha welcomed Jaishankar at the airport.

After reaching Sri Lanka, Jaishankar first met the new Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath. After this he wrote on his Assured him of India’s continued support in Sri Lanka’s economic reconstruction. There will be a meeting with PM and President also
Officials said Jaishankar will also meet Sri Lankan President Dissanayake and Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya. He said that during this visit, Jaishankar will make efforts to further strengthen bilateral relations with the new NPP government in Colombo. Officials said Jaishankar will also discuss Indian projects in Sri Lanka and highlight their importance in bilateral relations between the two countries. Dissanayake, while in opposition, had raised objections to some Indian projects, particularly sustainable energy projects run by the Adani Group.
He promised to cancel these projects if he came to power and claimed that these projects were against the interests of Sri Lanka. Before Jaishankar’s departure, the External Affairs Ministry in New Delhi had said on Thursday that Jaishankar would meet the Sri Lankan leadership during his visit to Colombo. His visit “In keeping with India’s Neighbor First Policy and Ocean Approach, this visit underlines the shared commitment of the two countries to further deepen their long-term partnership for mutual benefit.”(Language)
