Xi Jinping, President of China.
Taipei: China’s population has declined last year also. The Chinese government said that this has happened for the third consecutive year. This points to the demographic challenges of the world’s second most populous country, which is grappling with an aging population and a shortage of working-age people.
According to statistics, by the end of 2024, China’s population was 1.408 billion. There has been a huge decline of 1.39 million compared to last year.
These figures, announced by the government in Beijing, follow those globally, especially in East Asia, countries like Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, where the birth rate has seen a decline. China three years ago joined Japan and most of the countries in Eastern Europe whose population is declining.
In many cases the reasons are the same
The continuous decline in China’s population is in many respects similar to that of other countries. Due to the rising cost of living here, young people are postponing or refusing marriage and child birth during higher education and career. Although people are living longer, it is not enough to keep up with the rate of new births. Therefore, the continuous decline in population has worried China. (Input-AP)
