Clash between Shia and Sunni in Pakistan: Shia and Sunni communities clash over land dispute in the north-western region of Pakistan (Shia and Sunni communities) At least 25 people have died and many are injured in the clashes that have been going on for several days.
Clashes that broke out last weekend in Kurram district of northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, bordering Afghanistan, are continuing, media reports said, citing officials.
He said several people from both sides were injured in the clashes since Saturday. Kurram has been a hotbed of communal violence in recent years.
Officials said they were trying to prevent a land dispute from spiraling into communal violence in the country’s restive northwest region, where extremist groups from both sides are active.
The tension has been building up for a long time
Provincial government spokesman Barrister Saif Ali said authorities were trying to defuse tensions with the help of tribal elders.
He said that after the peace talks in Kurram, both the parties have agreed not to resort to violence. About 15% of the 24 crore population of Sunni-dominated Pakistan are Shia Muslims and there has been tension between the two communities for a long time.
Although people of both the communities live peacefully in the country to a large extent, tensions between them have been seen for decades in some areas, especially in some parts of Kurram district where the Shia community is dominant. In July also, several people from both sides were killed due to land dispute.
