The head of Bangladesh’s Border Security Force Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) said on Thursday that the news of attacks on minorities in their country was “exaggerated”. He said that the authorities have taken steps to protect minorities.
Addressing a joint press conference with Border Security Force (BSF) chief Daljit Singh Chaudhary, Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzamam Siddiqui, Director General of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), said that the Bangladeshi delegation has put fences at some places on the India-Bangladesh border Has objected to the relationship and is expected to resolve these issues in the future.
Chaudhary said that after the fall of Sheikh Hasina government on August 5, 2024, there has been a significant decrease in infiltration on the international border. On the issue of minorities, Siddiqui said, “In Bangladesh, attacks on minorities are extended. We received many requests from minorities for safety as they were scared. BGB assured them that we would help. ”
The BGB chief said that issues related to fences were discussed in detail in their biennial meeting with BSF as it was the most concentrated agenda. He said, “Wherever issues are there, we have requested a joint inspection.”
Siddiqui also said that there was no discussion on rebuilding the Indo-Bangladesh border treaty, which was agreed in 1975. He said, “It was not under the purview of this meeting,” he said.
This was the first top level meeting between the two Border Security Forces after the fall of Sheikh Hasina government in August last year.
The BSF protects the 4,096 km long India -Bangladesh border that passes through five states – West Bengal (2,217 km), Tripura (856 km), Meghalaya (443 km), Assam (262 km) and Mizoram (318 km) .
The previous edition of these biennial talks was held in Dhaka in March last year.
