Arusha: Till now there was an outcry across the world due to Corona and HMPV infection. But now there has been a stir due to the arrival of another new virus. The name of this virus is said to be Marburg, due to which 8 people have died in Tanzania. The World Health Organization has become alert after these deaths. WHO said on Wednesday that eight people had died from the suspected Marburg outbreak in a remote part of northern Tanzania.
WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a statement, “We have so far received information about 9 cases of Marburg virus infection in Tanzania, of which 8 people have died. According to WHO, like Ebola, Marburg virus originates from fruits, bats. It occurs and spreads among other people through close contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals or surfaces such as contaminated sheets.
Marburg is fatal for 88 percent people
According to WHO, if not treated, 88 percent of people who fall ill from the Marburg outbreak can be fatal. Its symptoms include fever, muscle pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and in some cases, death from excessive blood loss. There is currently no authorized treatment or vaccine for Marburg or available. WHO said its risk assessment for the suspected outbreak in Tanzania is high nationally and regionally, but low globally. There was no immediate comment from Tanzanian health officials.
The first case of Marburg was found in Rwanda
The Marburg outbreak was first reported in Rwanda on 27 September. This was announced on 20 December. Rwandan officials reported a total of 15 deaths and 66 cases from the outbreak. Most of these affected patients were health workers who had previously cared for the patients. At least five people died in a 2023 outbreak in Marburg, Kagera, which shares the border with Rwanda.
