A scene of violence erupting in Mozambique.
Maputo (Mozambique): A decision of the Supreme Court of Mozambique has created an uproar in the country. The country’s Supreme Court gave such a verdict that violence broke out. 21 people died in this. This brings the death toll in the Mozambique violence to 150. Let us tell you that after the court declared Daniel Chapo, the presidential candidate from the ruling Frelimo party, the winner of the disputed elections held on October 9, violence broke out there, in which at least 21 people, including two police officers, were killed. Officials gave this information on Tuesday.
Mozambique’s Interior Minister Pascoal Ronda told a news conference in Maputo late Tuesday that the violence and looting began after the court’s announcement the day before. He said young supporters of Chapo’s nearest rival and losing candidate, Venancio Mondlane, led the violence. In this election, Chapo got 65 percent votes while Mondlane could get only 24 percent votes. “Preliminary surveys have shown that 236 incidents of violence were recorded across the nation in the last 24 hours,” Rhonda said.
The mob freed 86 prisoners from jail
He said that 13 civilians and 12 police personnel were injured. Ronda said that a total of 25 vehicles, including two police vehicles, were set on fire. He said that 11 police posts and a prison were attacked and vandalized and 86 prisoners were freed. Mondlane has called for a shutdown starting Friday, but violence has already escalated in the country and the situation remained tense in the capital on Tuesday night. The death toll in post-poll violence has crossed 150 since the country’s election body announced preliminary results. (AP)
