Beirut: The situation in Syria is continuously worsening. Syrian government forces have lost control of the city of Daraa. This is considered a major blow to the regime of President Bashar al-Assad. Meanwhile, thousands of people have fled from Homs, the third largest city in the center of Syria. After capturing most of the territory of Aleppo, the country’s largest city, the rebels have also taken control of Homs to a large extent. The army said it had withdrawn to avoid fighting inside the city and to save the lives of civilians.

Rebels led by the jihadist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group (HTS) have said they will march on Homs and the capital, Damascus. Video circulating online showed a large number of cars on a highway. These cars were carrying people fleeing from the city of Homs. Meanwhile, the foreign ministers of Iran, Iraq and Syria have gathered in Baghdad to discuss the rapidly changing situation. Iraqi Foreign Minister Fawad Hussein expressed concern, saying his government was closely monitoring the situation in Syria. Syrian Foreign Minister Bassam Sabbagh said the current developments could pose a serious threat to the security of the region.

According to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, rebel fighters on Friday captured the towns of Rastan and Talbiseh, which are located five kilometers from Homs. The rebels have managed to enter Rastan and Talbiseh without facing any resistance. Residents of Damascus told The Associated Press that people were rushing to markets to buy food, fearing the situation would worsen.
