Maldives is India’s main maritime neighbor
Maldives is one of India’s major maritime neighbors in the Indian Ocean region. Recent times have seen growth in overall bilateral relations between Maldives and India, including defence. However, relations were severely strained after Muizzu, considered a pro-China leader, assumed the presidency in November 2023. Within hours of taking oath, Muizzu had asked for withdrawal of Indian military personnel from Maldives. Tension in relations eased after Muizzu pledged to strengthen bilateral ties with India during his visit to Delhi in October. (Language)
