The Liberal Party, led by Prime Minister Mark Carney in Canada, has registered an unexpected victory in the general election held on Monday and has reached a position to form the government. In the beginning, the Liberal party looked backward, but the controversial statements by US President Donald Trump changed the direction of the election.
Trump shared the national spirit of Canadian voters by Trump as Canada as the “51st state” of the US and his economy. This led to widespread resentment in the public and the Liberal party got unexpected public support.
According to the election results, the Liberal Party has got more seats from the Conservative Party. Although whether he is close to a clear majority, it will be clear only after the final calculation. Despite this, the edge of seats has strengthened its possibilities of government formation.
Until a few months ago, the Liberal Party was in a very weak position. But as Trump’s statements came out, ideological polarization increased and the Liberal party got direct benefit. Former justice minister of Liberal Party David Lamatti said, “Our condition was very bad in December. But now we are ready to form a new government. All this is the result of Mark Carney’s strategy.”
On the other hand, the leader of the Conservative Party Pierre Polyvarver tried to convert the election into a mandate against former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Linking the almost a decade long tenure of Trudeau with issues like inflation, housing crisis and food inflation, he tried to woo voters.
However, Polyvarver’s soft tremp towards Trump proved to be harmful for him. He wrote on social media a few hours before the voting ends, “President Trump, do not interfere in our election. Only Canadian voters will decide the future of the country.”
This election was held at a time when the country was recently recovering from a violent incident at a street fair in Vancouver. After this attack, all major parties stopped their publicity for some time. The police, not considering it a terrorist incident, have described the attacker as a mentally unhealthy local citizen.
