The NPP won a decisive victory in Galle, the capital of the southern province, with more than 70 percent of the vote.

65 percent voting took place

Sri Lanka has a population of 21 million and has more than 17 million voters. Parliamentary elections are held for a five-year term. About 65 percent voting took place in Sri Lanka on Thursday and now the results have also come out. There are 225 seats in the Parliament of Sri Lanka and for majority it is necessary to win 113 seats. Presidential elections were held here two months ago in September.

First parliamentary election after the economic crisis

Let us tell you that after the economic crisis of 2022, parliamentary elections have been held in Sri Lanka for the first time. Due to the severe economic recession, the then President Gotabaya Rajapaksa was removed from office. This time more than 8 thousand candidates were in the fray in the elections. The parliamentary elections were considered a litmus test for President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s ruling party NPP.
