Why earthquakes occur in Afghanistan
According to the Red Cross, Afghanistan has a history of powerful earthquakes and the Hindu Kush mountain range is geopolitically active area, where earthquakes occur every year. Afghanistan is located on several fault lines between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, with a fault line directly passing through Herat. Its location on several active fault lines in the area with a collision between Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates makes it seismically active. These plates meet and collide, which often causes seismic activity.
Afghanistan sensitive to natural disasters
According to the United Nations Office to coordinate human affairs, Afghanistan remains highly sensitive to natural disasters including seasonal floods, landslides and earthquakes. The UNOCHA stated that the continuous earthquake in Afghanistan damages weak communities, which are already struggling with decades and backwardness and they have very little flexibility to deal with many shaking that come together.
