Jerusalem: There has always been doubt about Artificial Intelligence that it can be misused on a large scale. Many times there have been reports of misuse of AI. But, now a news has come which has proved that if AI is used properly then it is no less than a boon for humans.

Nussbaum ready to return to the screen

In fact, Israel’s famous TV journalist, Moshe Nussbaum, had lost his ability to speak clearly due to ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). He even thought that his career would be over, but now with the help of AI, his distinctive voice has been brought back again. 71-year-old Nussbaum, known to the audience as ‘Nussy’, is all set to return to the screens once again. Nussbaum was diagnosed with ALS two years ago.

Nussbaum’s troubles increased

ALS is also called ‘Lou Gehrig’. This neurological disease affects the nerve cells that control muscles throughout the body. Initially, Nussbaum promised viewers of Israel’s Channel 12 News that he would continue working as long as he was physically able. But, gradually it became difficult. It was a blow to the career of a journalist who had covered many of Israel’s most important reports for more than 40 years. He covered everything from suicide bombings and scenes from the front lines of the war in Gaza and Lebanon to scandals in the Israeli parliament and high-profile court cases.

Difficulty in walking and speaking

Nussbaum was unable to report from the scene after the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. In a recent interview with colleagues at the country’s largest station ‘Channel 12’, he said that this was the first war in his career in which he was sitting out. Despite having trouble walking and speaking, he began a program of interviewing wounded soldiers in Israeli hospitals. He asked questions slowly and intermittently and this continued for the first half of the war. Then, as speaking and understanding became more difficult, his interviews became less frequent.

what nussbaum said

Recently, ‘Channel 12’ made a surprise announcement that it will bring back Nussbaum as a ‘commentator’ with the help of AI in the coming weeks. “It took me a few moments to understand it (AI) and also to understand that now I am the one speaking,” Nussbaum told The Associated Press (AP) via message. Gradually, I am understanding the meaning of this device for people with disabilities, including myself.”

How will Nussbaum work?

Nussbaum will report her stories and then write them using an AI program that has been trained to speak using Nussbaum’s voice. They will be filmed as if they are performing. People with speech disabilities have been using traditional ‘text-to-speech’ technology for years, but those voices often sound robotic, flat and devoid of emotion. In contrast, AI technology is trained using recordings of a person’s voice. Due to his long career in TV and radio, Nussbaum has spoken for thousands of hours and his tone and phrasing can be imitated exactly. Nussbaum will not be able to go on the scene, instead providing commentary and analysis about crime and national security, which have been his areas of expertise for decades. (AP)
