Bangkok: A fire broke out in a hotel located on Khao San Road, a popular tourist spot in Bangkok. Three foreign nationals died and several others sustained burn injuries in the fire. Thailand Police has given information about this incident on Monday. Police Colonel Sanong Sengmani told The Associated Press that the three people who died in the fire were foreign tourists. One died on the spot while the other two died after being taken to the hospital. Police said the fire broke out on the fifth floor of the six-storey Amber Hotel.

Khao San Road is famous as ‘Backpacker Street’ in Bangkok and is bustling with activity 24 hours a day. At present, the fire has been brought under control and the cause of the fire is being investigated. At the time of the fire, 75 people were staying in the hotel. Seven people were injured in the fire, including two Thais and five foreign nationals. Srikanth Kolamala, a 37-year-old Indian national who lives in Singapore and was visiting Thailand on holiday, witnessed the rescue operation and said firefighters broke the glass windows of the hotel to get people out.

Khao San Road Business Association president Sanga Ruangwattanakul was standing outside the hotel when the fire broke out. He said 20,000 people were expected to attend the New Year’s Eve event on Tuesday night. He said, “Now everyone is scared of what has happened and fears that it will impact tomorrow’s event. But, of course, there is no need to worry because we have already held a meeting with the police.” And we have 150 more police and district personnel for security on Khao San Road.” (AP)
