Oscar winning director Hamdan Ballal attacked
Palestinian co-director Hamdan Ballal of Oscar winning documentary “No other land” was attacked in Israeli-occupied West Bank. The Israeli army then detained Hamdan Ballal and two other citizens on Monday, who were released on Tuesday. The incident took place in Susia village near Kirayat Araba Basti of West Bank, where some residents of Israeli Basti attacked Ballal and his fellow Palestinian citizens. Filmmaker Ballal said that during the attack, he was kicked like a football on his head.
“Put on the ground under the air conditioner”
Ballal said that Israeli soldiers blindfolded him for more than 20 hours and was seated on the ground under a sharp air conditioner. He told that whenever the soldiers used to come on their guard shift, they used to kick, punch them or beat them with poles. Ballal does not speak Hebrew, but he heard him saying his name and the word “Oscar”. In an interview given at a hospital in West Bank after his release on Tuesday, he said, “I realized that they were specially attacking me.”
Israeli army issued a statement
The Israeli army issued a statement saying that it detained three Palestinian citizens on suspicion of stone pelting, while an Israeli citizen was arrested for violent confrontation. The army also said that after these arrests, they handed them over to the Israeli police for questioning and expelled an Israeli citizen from the area for medical treatment.
Controversy over the film ‘No other land’
The Oscar winning film ‘No other land’ shows the struggle of the Israeli army to stop their villages from demolishing their villages. The film highlights the increasing tension and struggle between both Israeli and Palestinian communities. Hamdan Ballal and Basel Adra have produced the film in association with Israeli directors Yoval Abraham and Rechal Sire. The film has won many other international awards from Berlin International Film Festival in 2024. After this, it has been expressed displeasure in Israel and other countries.
Basel Adra told about the incident
Adra said that during Ramadan on Monday evening, when the people of the village were opening Rosa, Israeli Basti had entered the village. He said that a townspeople, who had already attacked the village, came to Ballal’s house with the soldiers and the soldiers fired in the air. Adra told that he saw Ballal after being beaten in front of his wife and children. Then the soldiers saw them handcuffs and blindfolding them into a military vehicle. (input language)
