Vikram Misri Bangladesh Visit
Dhaka: Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri arrived in Bangladesh on Monday on a one-day visit. This is the first high-level visit from India after the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government in August. Misri’s visit comes amid rising tensions in relations between New Delhi and Dhaka over attacks on minorities, including Hindus, in Bangladesh following Hasina’s ouster from power.
The issue of attacks on Hindus will arise
The Egyptian is likely to hold comprehensive talks with his Bangladeshi counterpart Mohammad Jashimuddin. He is also scheduled to meet Bangladesh’s acting Foreign Minister Mohammad Tauheed Hussain. It is believed that he will raise India’s concerns regarding attacks on Hindus with Dhaka.
Sheikh Hasina had to leave the country
In August this year, Hasina was forced to leave the country due to massive anti-government protests, after which relations between India and Bangladesh came under strain. Yunus took over the reins of the interim government just days after Hasina took refuge in India.
India-Bangladesh relations are tense
Relations between the two countries have become further strained in recent weeks following attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh and the arrest of Hindu saint Chinmoy Krishna Das. In the last few weeks, there have been incidents of violence against Hindus and other minorities in the neighboring country as well as attacks on temples, over which India has expressed deep concern.
