Following the order of the International Crime Court (ICC) in a crime case against humanity, the police of Philippine arrested former President Rodrigo Dutarte at the International Airport in Manila on Tuesday. The Philippine government gave this information.
The warrant was issued by the International Crime Court against Dutarte in this case.
A statement issued by the office of President Ferdinand Marcos said that Dutarte was arrested after coming from Hong Kong and police detained him on the order of the International Crime Court.
The International Crime Court is investigating massive murders under the action of the former President against illegal drugs.
The International Crime Court began an investigation into the killings of the killings against drug addiction during Dutarte’s tenure from November 1, 2011 to March 16, 2019. He was the mayor of the southern city of Davo at the time of the incident. It was considered a possible crime against humanity.
Duterte separated the Philippine from the ‘Rome Act’ in 2019. Human rights activists say the step was taken with the aim of avoiding accountability on murders.
The ‘Rome Act’ of the International Crime Court is the treaty under which the International Crime Court was established.
The Dutarte administration proposed to suspend the global court investigation at the end of 2021 and argued that the Philippine officials were already investigating the same allegations and also said that it does not come under the purview of the International Crime Court.
In July 2023, the appeal judges of the International Crime Court ruled that the investigation could resume and dismissed the objections of the Dutete administration.
The International Crime Court located in the Hague of the Netherlands can intervene when country is reluctant or unable to prosecute suspects in the most heinous international crimes, including genocide, war crime and crimes against humanity.
In the year 2022, President Ferdinand Marcos Junior, who became Dutarte’s successor, had a sharp political controversy with the former President. Marcos has decided not to re -involve the global court.
However, the Marcos administration has said that if the International Crime Court asks the International Police to detain Dutarte through the so -called red notice, he will cooperate.
