Berlin: German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has dissolved the country’s parliament. The President has made this announcement in view of holding premature elections. After this, further legal proceedings have started. President Frank-Walter Steinmeier ordered the dissolution of parliament on Friday and new elections for Feb. 23 in the wake of the collapse of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s ruling coalition.
Let us tell you that German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Friday ordered the dissolution of Parliament and holding elections on February 23 in view of the defeat of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s coalition government in the trust vote. Scholz lost a confidence vote on December 16 and now leads a minority government. Scholz’s three-party coalition government plunged into crisis on November 6 when he fired his finance minister over a dispute over how to revive Germany’s stagnant economy.
Elections will be held within 60 days of dissolution of Parliament
Following this incident, leaders of several major parties agreed that parliamentary elections should be held on 23 February, seven months earlier than originally planned. Since the post-World War II constitution does not allow the ‘Bundestag’ (Parliament) to dissolve itself, it was up to Steinmeier to decide whether to dissolve Parliament and call elections. He had 21 days to take this decision. After the dissolution of Parliament, elections must be held in the country within 60 days. (agency)
