SEOUL: South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol apologized on Saturday for causing public concern over his short-lived attempt to impose martial law in the country earlier this week. South Korean lawmakers will vote Saturday to impeach President Yoon over his attempt to impose martial law. Protests are increasing across the country demanding Yun’s removal.

What did President Yoon say in his address?

President Yun Suk-yeol said in a brief televised address Saturday morning that he would not shirk legal or political responsibility for attempting to impose martial law and promised not to make any further attempts to impose it. He said he would leave it to his political party to deal with the political turmoil in the country, including “matters related to my tenure.”

Surrounded by his own party

At present, it is not clear whether the motion submitted by opposition lawmakers will get the two-thirds majority needed to impeach Yoon, but leaders of Yoon’s own party have called for his constitutional powers to be suspended. He has been declared unfit to continue in office. Leaders of Yun’s own party said he may take more such steps, including trying again to impose martial law. Since then, the chances of the impeachment motion getting majority have increased. To impeach Yun, support of 200 out of 300 members of the National Assembly would be required. The opposition parties that brought the impeachment motion jointly have a total of 192 seats.
