Hassan Nasrallah
After the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut, Lebanon, new babies born in Iraq are being named Nasrallah. According to Iraq’s Health Ministry, approximately 100 children have been registered with the name “Nasrallah” across the country. Nasrallah and several of his close associates were killed in Israeli air strikes. Nasrallah was the head of Hezbollah for more than three decades. He was seen by people in many Arab countries as a symbol of protest against Israel and Western influence. Nasrallah was very popular among Iraq’s Shia community, the majority population.
Nasrallah’s killing sparked anger across the country, leading to mass demonstrations in Baghdad and other cities. Protesters condemned Israel’s actions and called the killing a violation of international law. Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani described Nasrallah as a “martyr on the path of religion”. Nasrallah’s death was marked by a three-day state mourning. During this time, prayer meetings were organized in his honor across the country.
Nasrallah’s deep connection with Iraq
Nasrallah has deep ties to Iraq, rooted in both religion and political ideology. Born in 1960 to an ordinary family, Nasrallah studied Islam at a Shia seminary in the Iraqi city of Najaf. It was here that his political views took shape and he joined the Dawa Party. However, after this he started on the path of terrorism. He joined Hezbollah after the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982. Formed with the support of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, Hezbollah was initially an organization created to oppose the Israeli military.
Took command of Hezbollah in 1992
Nasrallah took over the reins of Hezbollah in 1992 after the assassination of his predecessor and mentor Abbas Mousavi. Over the next three decades, he built the group into a large organization with a strong hold in the region and emerged as a powerful force. It has influenced conflicts from Syria to Yemen and trained Palestinian fighters in Gaza. Under Nasrallah’s leadership, Hezbollah’s military strength increased and the organization also became politically stronger. It helped provide missiles and rockets to groups like Hamas in Iraq and Yemen, all of which were part of the opposition to Israel and its allies.
