On his demise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on social media platform X, “Ratan Tata was a visionary business leader, an extraordinary human being with a kind soul. His demise is the saddest moment for India.”

Tata Group’s business extends from salt to airplanes. There are more than 150 Tata Group product manufacturing companies across the world, which have given India a distinct identity at the global level. The Tata Group bought British tea company Tetley for $432 million in 2000 and Anglo-Dutch steel maker Corus for $13 billion in 2007, the largest acquisition of a foreign company by an Indian company at that time. Tata Motors then acquired British luxury auto brands Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford Motor Company (FN) in 2008 for $2.3 billion. Among his favorite projects at Tata Motors were the Indica and the Nano, the first car models designed and manufactured in India, which are said to be the world’s cheapest cars.
