Taiwan Typhoon Krathon: Two people died and more than 100 were injured due to strong winds and torrential rain amid fears of a typhoon in Taiwan. Due to the impact of the storm, thousands of people living in low-lying and mountainous areas have been evacuated to safe places. The Taiwanese Central Emergency Operation Center has reported that at least 102 people were injured and two died due to the changed weather conditions due to the impact of Typhoon Krathon. An elderly man died after falling from a ladder while pruning a tree in the eastern city of Hualien, while another person was killed when a stone fell on a moving vehicle in Taitung County. Two others are missing.

According to the Central Meteorological Administration, the storm, with strong winds of 209 kilometers per hour, is expected to reach Taiwan’s densely populated west coast on Thursday. The strongest winds are expected in the southwestern part of Taiwan. At least 128 cm of rain has fallen in coastal Taitung County and 43 cm in the major port city of Kaohsiung in the past four days.

Schools and government offices closed

Authorities have closed schools and government offices across the coastal region and canceled all domestic flights due to the storm. In Hualin County, more than 3,000 people were evacuated from a residential area vulnerable to landslides, officials said. About 200 people in the southwestern city of Tainan and more than 800 residents of southern Pingtung county were also evacuated. Kaohsiung, a city with a population of about 2.7 million, is expected to be directly affected by the storm. (AP)
