TOKYO: Japan approved additional sanctions on Friday against Russia over its war in Ukraine, including an asset freeze on dozens of individuals and groups. Along with this, restrictions have also been imposed on exports to dozens of organizations from many other countries including Russia. These sanctions have been imposed on those who help Russia avoid international sanctions.

Japan has imposed restrictions before also

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi told the Cabinet on Friday that the additional sanctions reflect Japan’s commitment to the G-7 effort to strengthen sanctions against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine. Japan has imposed sanctions several times before. The latest move comes a month after Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba reaffirmed the country’s policy at the G-7 online summit in mid-December.

Japan has made the list

“This is Japan’s contribution as part of the international effort toward achieving global peace and resolving the problems related to Ukraine caused by Russian aggression,” Hayashi said. Japan has made a list of individuals, organizations and banks whose assets will be frozen. The list includes 11 individuals, 29 organizations and three Russian banks. Apart from this, one bank each from North Korea and Georgia is also included in the list, which are accused of helping Russia avoid sanctions.

The Cabinet has approved imposing a complete export ban on 22 military-related organizations of Russia, including technology and machinery manufacturers. According to the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Japan has also approved a list of 335 items that cannot be exported to Russia from January 23. The list includes vehicles engines and parts, motorized bicycles, communication and acoustic equipment, mechanical devices and ‘valves’. Export sanctions will also be imposed on 31 non-Russian groups that the government says helped Russia evade sanctions. These include 11 groups from Hong Kong, seven from China and eight from Türkiye.
