Islamabad: Former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is in jail in Pakistan, has taken a big decision. Khan on Thursday asked his party to end talks with the government over its failure to set up a judicial commission. The government and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) started talks last month to end political instability. Three rounds of talks have taken place between the two sides.
Imran Khan’s party had made this demand
During the last round of talks on January 16, Imran Khan’s party had submitted a demand letter to the government delegation which was asked to be completed within seven days. One of the major demands is the formation of judicial commissions to prove the incidents of May 9, 2023 and November 26, 2024.
‘Pakistan government has failed’
The government has said that the next meeting is expected to be held on January 28, when it will formally respond to PTI’s demands. However, PTI chairman Gauhar Khan told reporters after his meeting with Imran in jail that the party founder has decided to stop talks as the government has not constituted the two commissions. Gauhar said, “The government had committed to form the commission within seven days, but it failed to complete it.”
‘There will be no talks’
PTI founder Imran Khan has clearly announced that there will be no further talks. He said that due to the government not following its commitments, there is no reason to continue the talks. Earlier, opposition leader Omar Ayub Khan had also warned that further talks would be futile without concrete steps on the commissions.
Khan is in jail since August 2023
Imran has been in jail since August 2023, but his party leaders regularly meet him to discuss the legal cases against him and the current political situation. Prime Minister’s aide and part of the negotiating team, Rana Sanaullah criticized PTI, accusing it of being stubborn. (Language)
