Islamabad: Pakistan’s Supreme Court on Saturday expressed dissatisfaction with the Election Commission while giving a big relief to former Pakistan PM Imran Khan. The court ordered the implementation of the court’s decision regarding the reserved seat. This decision is likely to benefit the party led by jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan. If the Supreme Court’s order is followed to the letter, Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) can emerge as the largest party in the National Assembly and the addition of reserved seats can increase its seats.

The apex court’s order is a major setback for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s ruling coalition as it will make the PTI the largest party in both houses of Parliament. The government led by the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party had filed a review petition in the Supreme Court against the decision to allot the reserved seat to the PTI on July 15. Earlier, a 13-member bench of the apex court had ruled by an eight-five majority on July 12 that the PTI is eligible for the reserved seat for women and minorities in the National Assembly and state assemblies. The court had also declared the PTI a parliamentary party.

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s troubles increased due to controversial social media post

On one hand, former PM Imran Khan got relief from the court, on the other hand, Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) increased his troubles. The FIA interrogated former Prime Minister Imran Khan for about 45 minutes in Adiala Jail on Saturday regarding a controversial post on the social media platform ‘X’. In this post, the heads of major government institutions were allegedly targeted. The FIA had registered a case against Khan on Friday for allegedly inciting rebellion against the government and government institutions through social media posts.

During the interrogation, Khan was questioned about the motive behind the posts and also asked who is handling his social media accounts. The FIA team is expected to visit him again to continue the investigation and determine who is responsible for managing Khan’s social media accounts and issuing instructions for such posts. Khan (71) had earlier insisted that he would cooperate in the investigation only in the presence of his legal team and had refused to meet the FIA investigation team. (Language)
